A macropad profile for Finder file inspection

Left-Hand Pad can put Finder inspection commands beside a Mac keyboard. Its twelve keys and two knobs do not all need assignments for this task. A useful starting profile helps you preview an item, read its information and return to the containing folder. Keep those view changes separate from file operations that alter the contents of your folders.

Which Finder commands are useful for inspection?

Start with a selected disposable file and try the normal commands for previewing and showing information. Apple's keyboard shortcut list for Mac identifies Space for Quick Look and Command-I for Get Info. Verify their behaviour on the system you use before assigning them to the pad.

Inspect the filename and location as well as the preview. Two files can display similar content while belonging to different projects or downloads. A quick preview is convenient, but it is not a substitute for knowing which item is selected and whether you are viewing the current version.

How do you make the return route predictable?

Test how you leave the preview and resume navigation in the file list. Keep a dedicated route back to the folder view if that is a frequent source of confusion. Avoid a timed sequence that opens a preview, waits and issues another command regardless of whether the preview is ready.

Try the controls with different Finder view modes that you actually use. Selection movement can feel different in a list and an icon arrangement. A profile should be tested in those contexts instead of assuming that the next item occupies a particular screen position.

Should the keypad also move or remove files?

Leave those operations off the initial inspection profile. Opening information and deleting an item are not equivalent steps. If you eventually add a move command, use an explicit label and retain a visible check of the destination and selected file.

Be especially careful about commands that apply to several selected items. The selection count should be apparent before an operation runs. A physical key cannot determine whether a multi-selection was intentional. Keep the ordinary Finder controls available so you can make that decision with the relevant context in view.

What should you save with the configuration?

Record the Finder command, emitted shortcut and expected starting state for each mapped control. Test normal typing afterward, particularly if a host remapper translates ordinary letters. Keep an export or written record of the previous assignments where supported. The Left-Hand Pad listing explains the configurable hardware, while the profile should remain a clear map of the Finder actions you have verified.
