Check accessibility permissions before remapping keys on Mac
Left-Hand Pad can be part of a Mac shortcut setup, but a host remapping utility may need permissions before it can observe or alter input. The keypad itself and the software interpreting its events are separate components. When a rule appears inactive, check the utility's documented requirements before repeatedly rewriting the hardware assignment or granting unrelated applications access.
Which program is responsible for the remap?
Identify the exact utility and installation you intended to use. A device configuration tool, a text-expansion app and a system-level remapper can have different requirements. Do not assume that a permission given to one automatically covers another. Open the utility through its normal application entry and review its own setup guidance.
Check whether the proposed shortcut can be assigned within the destination application instead. If so, a host-wide remapper may not be needed for that action. Keep the setup no broader than the functionality you actually require, while respecting the software's documented operating model.
What should you check in a permission request?
Read the application name and the kind of access being requested. Follow the operating system's normal settings flow and the tool's official instructions. An unexpected request from another application is not part of the keypad's setup merely because it appeared at the same time.
On a managed computer, permission controls may belong to the organisation's administrator. Treat an unavailable setting as a constraint to resolve through that process. Do not look for a bypass just to make a convenience shortcut work. A normal keyboard command remains a useful fallback while configuration is incomplete.
How do you separate permissions from a bad rule?
After following the supported setup, test a simple reversible mapping in an empty document. If the utility includes an event viewer, inspect whether it sees the original input. The Karabiner EventViewer instructions describe one such diagnostic tool. Observing an event and applying a remap are related but distinct checks.
If input is visible yet the action does not occur, review the rule's target device, application and conditions. A permissions change cannot fix a rule that targets the wrong app. Record the failing layer instead of cycling through settings without a specific hypothesis.
What should you document for the next setup?
Keep the utility name, official setup reference and a description of the successful test. Note any restart or relaunch required by the tool's instructions. Avoid exporting private input logs with a public support request. Consult Left-Hand Pad's setup details for the hardware side, with macOS access and software rules verified separately.
