Choose macOS shortcuts that avoid the Option character layer

Left-Hand Pad adds a separate group of shortcut keys for a Mac workflow. If a proposed Option combination inserts a symbol when you expected a command, the keyboard input source may be interpreting it as text. That is a legitimate part of typing on macOS, not necessarily a broken mapping. Choose shortcuts with awareness of the characters you still need to enter.

Does the combination already produce useful text?

Open a plain document and try the proposed chord on your regular keyboard using the active input source. Note whether it inserts a character, begins an accent sequence or does nothing visible. Do not assume the result matches a screenshot taken with another language layout.

Keep that observation beside the action you want to bind. If the combination already has a useful writing function, consider a different shortcut rather than globally replacing it. A keypad should not make normal text entry harder simply because its spare keys are intended for commands.

Can the destination application own the shortcut?

Look for the command in the application's shortcut settings and test an assignment there. An app-specific binding can keep the new behaviour limited to the tool where it is needed. It still needs checking in text boxes and embedded terminals, which may have their own handling rules.

The VS Code keybinding documentation discusses keyboard layouts and context-dependent rules. Use the diagnostic view if the editor reports a different input from the one you expected. The printed name of a key and the event interpreted by an application are not always interchangeable.

Should you change the input source to make it work?

Avoid changing your everyday typing layout solely to accommodate one shortcut unless that broader change is intentional. It can alter punctuation and symbol entry throughout the computer. Test the keypad under the input sources you actually use, and record any combination whose behaviour varies.

Apple's guide to writing with other input sources provides the system context. A stable profile should fit that workflow rather than depending on you remembering a hidden language state before every press.

What does a sensible final assignment preserve?

Verify that the command works in the intended application and that the original typing functions remain available where you need them. Keep a clear fallback for an input source that interprets the chord differently. Save the exact combination and its scope in the legend. Review Left-Hand Pad's configuration information before choosing the hardware, because supported remapping and predictable text entry both matter to this setup.
