Trigger macOS Shortcuts From a Macropad
Left-Hand Pad offers twelve keys in a four-by-three arrangement plus two rotary knobs for macOS. It can trigger automations already built in the Shortcuts app without hiding their steps in device firmware.
How do you give a Shortcut a keyboard trigger?
Open the Shortcut in the macOS app, view its details and choose Add Keyboard Shortcut. Press an uncommon combination, then make one macropad position emit that combination through its supported remapping layer. Apple's guide presents this as a way to run a Shortcut while working in another app.
Check for conflicts in System Settings and the active application. A global-looking shortcut may still be consumed by another layer. Test it with the editor, terminal and browser focused, and keep actions that ask for confirmation visible.
How do you run Shortcuts from the command line?
Apple supplies the shortcuts run command. Quote a Shortcut name containing spaces, and use the documented input-path option when passing files. A hotkey tool can invoke that command when a direct keyboard shortcut is unavailable or when a wrapper must record the result.
Apple notes that command-line Shortcuts are most efficient when they do not show alerts or ask for input. If an action needs input, the process can pause waiting for a response. Design a clear fallback rather than assuming the run completed.
Which automations suit a physical key?
Opening a project workspace, starting a dictation mode, creating a dated note or showing a small menu can make sense. The result should be visible and safe to repeat. A Shortcut that sends a message, changes cloud files or purchases something needs an explicit review step.
Keep the hardware output generic and the automation inside Shortcuts. That leaves the steps readable, makes permissions easier to inspect and avoids rebuilding the pad map whenever the workflow changes.
What are the focus and permission risks?
Shortcuts asks for permission when an action accesses private data, and a first run may display a prompt. Keyboard control software may need its own accessibility approval. Complete those grants deliberately with the Shortcut open, not by repeatedly pressing a key whose state is unclear.
The Left-Hand Pad can host several automation triggers, but add one at a time. Use distinctive combinations, keep names stable, avoid automatic submission and verify the Shortcut's input assumptions after macOS updates or iCloud synchronization changes. Keep a manual way to run every automation from the Shortcuts app. If the pad binding breaks, that control distinguishes a Shortcut problem from a keyboard problem without editing both layers.
