A five-key macropad profile for incident triage
EM Mini Pad is a compact five-key keypad with a rotary knob. During incident triage, a useful profile should help you reach evidence without adding another interface to manage. Start with the places you already consult: the incident record, a relevant dashboard, logs, the runbook and your working notes. The keypad is a navigation aid, not an incident response system.
Which destinations deserve the limited keys?
Choose views that remain useful across incidents rather than a collection of service-specific commands. An incident tracker and the main observability interface may stay consistent even when the affected service changes. A link to a single old alert will not. Label the destination and note which browser or application should receive the shortcut.
Use the normal application launcher, bookmark or supported shortcut to prototype each action. Avoid embedding account credentials or temporary authenticated URLs in a keypad profile. A bookmarked view should use the account's ordinary access checks. Anyone borrowing the device should not inherit private text macros simply by pressing a key.
How do you keep the environment visible?
Opening a dashboard is useful only when its service, environment and time range are apparent. Leave those controls visible and confirm them before interpreting the chart. A familiar physical button can make an old browser tab feel authoritative even when it is showing yesterday's interval or a different deployment.
Prefer a stable landing view over a macro that clicks through remembered screen positions. Layout changes and delayed loading can make a click sequence select the wrong environment. The shortcut should shorten the path to evidence while leaving enough context to establish what you are viewing.
Where should service-changing actions stay?
Keep restart, rollback and configuration changes in the existing operational workflow. They require information and authority that a physical key cannot supply. Do not pair opening a runbook with executing its first command. The current incident may not match the situation that command was written for.
Use one key for your notes if recording observations is a repeated interruption. Include the observation time and source in the note itself. The keypad can focus the document, but writing an accurate update still involves deciding what you actually observed and what remains a hypothesis.
How should the profile be rehearsed?
Walk through the layout during a quiet period using ordinary read-only pages. Verify the destinations with another browser tab active and after reopening the tools. Keep a small legend beside the pad and document any required remapper. The EM Mini Pad offers compact controls, with application setup and access still handled by your existing systems.
