Dictation hotkey works but the wrong microphone records
Voice Pad combines mechanical shortcut controls with a supplied microphone for a configured voice workflow. If pressing the dictation key works but speech sounds distant, inspect the selected input before adjusting the shortcut. The laptop microphone, a headset or another attached device might still be the recording source. A device being connected does not mean every application has switched to it.
Which selector takes precedence?
Begin inside the program doing the recording. Look for an explicit microphone choice and check whether it names a device or says it uses the system default. If it chooses a named source, changing the operating system's default may not alter that application's selection.
For a browser tool, inspect its visible audio settings and the site's microphone permission. Keep the website, browser and system layers distinct in your notes. Changing several selectors together may fix the symptom temporarily while leaving you uncertain which setting mattered.
How can you identify the source without guessing?
Make a short spoken test at your normal working position. Review the input indication and playback where available, then compare with a deliberately selected alternative microphone. Keep the same phrase and distance for the comparison wherever practical.
Do not rely only on similar device labels. If two entries are ambiguous, disconnect the optional device when no important recording is running and observe which entry disappears. Reconnect it and select the returning source explicitly. Avoid using loud taps or blowing into the microphone as an identification method.
Why does the source change after a meeting?
Meeting software and dictation software can maintain separate preferences. A headset used for a call might become the system default, while a transcription application continues following that default after the call ends. Alternatively, the transcription tool might retain an unavailable device until it falls back to another one.
Check the actual selected source after attaching or removing a headset. Also confirm the output device separately if you need to hear playback. Hearing sound through headphones does not establish that their microphone supplied the recording.
What is a useful final check?
Close the settings panel and run the ordinary shortcut workflow in an editable draft. Capture a sentence, stop deliberately and inspect the resulting text. If the software supports playback, listen for clear speech from the expected position. Save a short note explaining where the input was set and repeat this check after major connection changes. The Voice Pad product information can help identify the hardware package, while microphone routing remains a setting to verify in your chosen recording tools.
