Dictation starts recording but produces no text
Whisper Key can be part of a voice-input setup, but recording activity alone does not prove that transcription and text insertion are working. Treat the route as separate stages: audio capture, speech processing and delivery into a document. Identify the last stage that succeeds before changing the device or reinstalling software. This makes an apparently empty result easier to diagnose.
Is the selected microphone capturing your voice?
Check the input selected in the transcription application and the operating system where relevant. A moving indicator might reflect another microphone, room noise or an audio source you did not intend to use. Speak a short neutral phrase and confirm that the app receives it through its supported test or preview tools.
Keep the recording free of private content while troubleshooting. If playback is available, listen for intelligible speech rather than relying only on a level meter. Avoid changing gain, microphone choice and connection mode simultaneously; a single controlled comparison gives more useful evidence.
Has the transcription stage actually started?
Inspect the tool's visible listening, processing or error state. Some services need a network connection, an installed model or a configured language before they produce text. Follow the requirements for the exact software in use. A hardware recording key cannot supply those missing dependencies.
Microsoft's Windows voice-typing guidance specifies an internet connection, a working microphone and a text box for that feature. Other transcription tools may differ, so do not apply those requirements universally or assume every service works offline.
Could the result exist somewhere other than the document?
Look for a transcript panel, history entry or review window within the dictation tool. It may have recognised the speech but not inserted it into the destination. Confirm that the target field is editable by typing a harmless word manually, then remove the test.
Check whether insertion requires a separate action or permission described by the tool. Do not repeatedly trigger recording while a previous result is still processing. That can make it harder to identify which output belongs to which test and may create unwanted duplicates later.
What should you record before seeking help?
Note the selected microphone, software version, connection requirement, language and visible state after the phrase. Describe whether audio was captured, text appeared internally and insertion succeeded. Keep raw recordings local unless sharing them is necessary and appropriate. See Whisper Key's setup notes for the device side, with transcription and delivery verified as separate software functions.
