Setting Up a Macropad for Windsurf on Linux
Five keys and a knurled knob make EM Mini Pad a small aluminium input block. A Linux rule can isolate the device, creating a restrained set of Windsurf and Cascade controls.
Does Windsurf on Linux accept custom keybindings?
Windsurf uses an editor-style command palette and offers familiar keymap choices during setup. Its documentation lists shortcuts for opening Cascade and changing modes. Search the commands in your installed version instead of relying on a copied default.
Choose command names before physical positions. Panel focus, cancellation, command palette and opening Cascade are safer first bindings than anything that applies a group of changes.
How do you configure keyd for the pad?
Use the keyd monitor to identify the device and every event it sends. Match the pad identifier, then convert one input to a spare function key. Reload the service and test in a harmless text field before adding the remaining positions.
Let keyd produce generic inputs and let Windsurf attach meaning to them. This keeps Linux remapping independent from the editor and avoids desktop-specific macro tools.
Which five actions should win the keys?
A practical set is open Cascade, escape or cancel, command palette, focus movement and one navigation action. If you add mode switching, replace another key and place it where it cannot be pressed by reflex. Code, Plan and Ask do not have the same consequences.
The knob may scroll if its events can be observed and mapped, but focus decides which panel moves. Leave it unassigned until editor and Cascade focus are predictable.
What changes under Wayland?
Because keyd works at the input-device layer, its basic substitutions do not depend on X11 or the active compositor. Active-application rules can vary by desktop. Start with device-specific global keys and use Windsurf's own context handling.
The EM Mini Pad supports wired USB-C or Bluetooth and lists a 1000 mAh cell. Use wired mode for setup, keep a normal keyboard connected and save a known-good keyd configuration before experimenting. Document the device identifier and every emitted spare key. If a command stops working, verify the Linux output first and the Windsurf binding second instead of changing both at once. Avoid wildcard keyd rules because they can alter an unrelated keyboard. Keep a second keyboard attached while testing and store a known-good configuration outside the active directory. After a desktop upgrade, test the five controls in a disposable project before returning to real code. Focus and context deserve the same check as the raw key event. Remove unused mappings rather than preserving them for a workflow you no longer follow.
