Does a Macropad Work Through a KVM Switch?

The anodised aluminium KM16 Macropad has sixteen keycaps, one large knob, two small knobs and confirmed VIA remapping. Those facts do not confirm on-device storage or compatibility with a particular KVM switch.

Why do KVM switches confuse some input devices?

Some KVM keyboard ports emulate a conventional keyboard so the computer always sees a stable device. That can improve basic switching but may omit unusual HID reports, consumer controls, rotary behavior or a configuration channel. A transparent USB peripheral port may pass more features while reconnecting the device during each switch.

KVM designs and firmware vary. Read the exact unit's manual to learn which ports are emulated, which are transparent and whether hubs or composite devices are supported.

Why do on-device bindings survive the hop?

If a device truly stores its mapping and emits ordinary key codes without host software, the selected computer only needs to receive those codes. However, VIA compatibility alone does not prove that every setting persists without the configurator, and it does not prove every KVM forwards the output.

Disconnect the pad from the configured computer, power-cycle it and test its keys on another compatible host. Treat that observation as specific to the tested firmware and mapping.

What should you test before trusting the setup?

Check every key and knob in both KVM positions, including uncommon function codes, key holds and rapid switching. Verify that the operating system sees only one expected input, that no key remains logically held after a switch and that the pad returns after sleep or restart.

Test the configuration path separately. Remapping may require a direct connection even when everyday key output works through the KVM. Keep a written fallback mapping and an ordinary keyboard attached.

When is plugging into one machine the better answer?

Use a direct port when the pad controls one high-risk environment, switching interrupts input or the KVM drops required reports. A dedicated connection also makes it obvious which computer will receive the press. Shared convenience is not worth ambiguous focus.

The KM16 Macropad offers confirmed VIA remapping, but the catalogue makes no KVM promise. Buy and configure around documented capabilities, then validate the full KVM, cable, host and firmware combination before binding consequential actions. Test after cold boot as well as during ordinary switching, since firmware setup screens may handle USB keyboards differently from the operating system. Do not use a failing KVM path for login, disk recovery or other situations where the fallback keyboard is unavailable. Record the KVM port and cable used so a later change can be diagnosed rather than blamed on the mapping.
