A Mini Macropad for Cline: Five Safe Views, Not Five Decisions

EM Mini Pad costs $75 and packs five keys plus one knurled knob into a very small, heavy anodised-aluminium block. Wired USB-C, Bluetooth and a 1000 mAh battery are confirmed. Key output, remapping, wireless runtime and Cline compatibility are not, so the first map should contain only reversible editor destinations.

What five actions define a safe Cline session?

Use view changes: focus Cline, editor, terminal, source control and diff. Discover the exact commands in the installed editor rather than trusting a copied list. Each result should appear immediately and be easy to reverse.

Approve, Reject, send, new task and checkpoint restore are decisions or state changes, not navigation. Keep them off the pad.

Can one key toggle Plan and Act modes?

Do not assume a stable editor command exists. More importantly, changing mode affects what Cline may propose or perform and requires awareness of the task and permissions. A compact button has no display for current mode.

Choose Plan or Act in Cline's visible interface. If the pad cannot find five safe destinations, leave keys inactive.

Should the knob control scroll or volume during long runs?

Neither behavior is confirmed. Test whether rotation and press produce separate remappable events. A verified knob may scroll the currently focused review surface, but focus must be obvious and normal controls must remain available.

Global volume is reversible yet unrelated to Cline. Avoid mixing system and editor actions on one small profile because mode errors become harder to diagnose.

When do five keys run out for editor work?

They run out when layers make one position ambiguous, not simply when all caps have labels. A larger pad can expose more direct destinations, while ordinary shortcuts may remain clearer than either device.

Start wired to remove pairing and battery uncertainty. Test Bluetooth sleep, wake, host switching and reconnect separately, ensuring no delayed event reaches a prompt or terminal. Remove old pairings, store no commands or paths in a profile and retest after updates. Cline's Auto Approve policy should remain entirely separate from input hardware.

The EM Mini Pad fits only when five mode-free editor destinations earn their space. Its physical weight does not prove grip, and its compactness does not make blind approval safer. Treat wireless convenience as a separate purchase criterion from Cline navigation. The confirmed 1000 mAh value does not predict battery health, wake reliability or time between charges. Keep the cable accessible and watch the operating system's connection state rather than guessing from a missed action. A profile should use uncommon chords, have an obvious name and include no stored text. Press neighboring keys and hold each cap in a blank document to detect repeats. If the knob has a press event, verify it independently from rotation. Disconnect the pad before any consequential task if a test result is unexplained.
