A Mini Macropad for Zed: Five Reversible Destinations
EM Mini Pad costs $75. It is a very small, heavy anodised-aluminium block with five keys, one knurled knob, wired USB-C, Bluetooth and a 1000 mAh battery. Remapping, emitted events, runtime and Zed support are not confirmed. Its best first job is a tiny map of reversible destinations.
What five Zed actions fit a five-key pad?
Consider Agent Panel focus, editor focus, terminal focus, project-panel focus and opening the agent diff. Zed's official action list currently exposes those kinds of commands, and its keymap can restrict bindings by context. Verify exact action names on the installed release.
Do not assign message send, keep, reject, tool permission or task launch. Five safe destinations are more useful than five fast consequences.
Can the knob scroll the Agent Panel's output?
Only if the knob emits distinct mappable events and the focused Zed surface accepts the resulting action. Neither is established by the catalogue. Rotation direction, press behavior and acceleration need direct observation.
Use a key viewer and blank Zed thread first. Keep ordinary scrolling available and leave the knob inactive if it behaves differently across editor, terminal and panel contexts.
Bluetooth or wired for an editor you keep in focus?
Wired mode makes pairing and battery state irrelevant during diagnosis. Bluetooth removes a data cable but adds remembered hosts, sleep, wake and reconnection. The battery specification does not establish usable runtime.
Configure with the cable if the real device permits it, then test each mode independently. A reconnect must not replay a held key or complete text left in an input field.
What outgrows a five-key pad first?
Usually the mental map, not the count. Layers, modes and long-press behavior make identical hardware mean different things. That is especially awkward beside Zed's Vim or Helix modes, whose active context already changes keyboard meaning.
Give the device uncommon neutral chords and let Zed translate them under narrow contexts. Test every key while a terminal, prompt editor and unrelated application are focused. No press should insert text or submit anything. Export configurations without personal paths, label active destinations and recheck after updates. If a normal shortcut remains easier, the separate object has no functional case.
The EM Mini Pad suits Zed only when a compact, mode-free navigation map survives restart, reconnect and focus changes. Its dense case and two connection choices do not justify putting agent decisions on an unverified peripheral. Keep charging behavior outside the shortcut test: a low battery or cable change must not be mistaken for a Zed fault. Pair it to one intended host, remove stale pairings and record which mode is active before each session. If the first event after wake disappears or arrives late, choose wired use for work that depends on predictable navigation.
