A Dedicated Push-to-Talk Key for Superwhisper
WhisperKey is a clear polycarbonate handheld voice keypad with four controls labelled mic, tick, cross and enter. Its mic key can serve as a physical Superwhisper push-to-talk control when the software shortcut and pad output are configured to match.
Does Superwhisper require the Fn key?
No. Current Superwhisper documentation says keyboard shortcuts are customizable and that single modifier keys, including Fn, can be used independently. Older defaults and past release behavior are not a reliable guide to a current installation. Open the Configuration shortcut section and inspect what is assigned now.
This matters because Fn and the macOS Globe key can have system functions that vary by keyboard and settings. A dedicated uncommon combination avoids relying on that shared modifier, but only after confirming Superwhisper accepts it.
How do you set a custom push-to-talk key?
In Superwhisper's Keyboard Shortcuts settings, edit Push-to-Talk and enter the combination produced by the handheld keypad. The documented behavior is press and hold to record, then release to stop. Push-to-Talk may share a shortcut with Toggle Recording, although separate bindings are easier to reason about.
Test the raw pad output first, then watch Superwhisper's recording indicator during press and release. If the shortcut editor struggles with a shared combination, the official guide suggests entering the main key before its modifiers.
Why can a handheld control feel different?
Holding the trigger near the speaking position can make the start and end gesture more deliberate than reaching for a laptop key. The labelled tick and cross controls can remain candidates for confirm and cancel only when Superwhisper exposes suitable shortcuts and accidental activation is harmless.
The keypad does not decide which microphone Superwhisper records. Select and test the actual audio input in software. A physical mic label is a control label, not proof that the keypad itself is the chosen audio source.
What limits remain in a push-to-talk setup?
Microphone permission, input selection, processing time and text-field focus still matter. Superwhisper documents that cancelling a longer recording can require confirmation, while cancellation during processing has different visible behavior. Learn those states before assigning the cross key.
The WhisperKey keeps four labelled controls in one hand, but begin with the mic key alone. Preserve a visible software stop route, test missed releases and verify the destination field before speaking or using the enter-labelled control. Keep the initial recordings short and disposable. Confirm that a released key ends capture, that processed text reaches the expected field and that the cancel control behaves differently only when the documented recording state requires it.
